Coventry to receive new fast-food chain in city centre.

Planning permission has just been put through for a new Popeyes Louisiana chicken restaurant, famous for its burgers, wraps and tenders, inside of the City Centre, on the site of the old Topshop inside of Broadgate. The restaurant would see the creation of over 30 new jobs.

The planning permission, which was put forward earlier this week, has until May 14th to be either approved or denied. If approved the site would feature modern fixtures, a large-scale kitchen and plentiful seating areas.

This establishment would fill a rather large gap on Coventry’s historic high street, left by the closure of Topshop in 2021, it joins several new changes occurring within the city. Including several new restaurants and the entire city centre south development.

The plans also see several changes to the listed building’s exterior, including HVAC exits and lit signs across the exterior. This change to the building may lead to the project being trapped inside of the planning stages for longer than anticipated, due to its editing of an older building.

The chain already has a foothold in Coventry, with a restaurant placed at Arena Shopping Park which opened on the 8th of December last year to a large reception of excited enjoyers.

We reached out to Coventry city council for comment; however, the plans are too early in development and are still pending. Popeyes however said “We are excited for the chance to have another restaurant inside of Coventry, and we hope that we can fill the space with something the people of Coventry can enjoy.”
