The Blitz - Operation Moonlight Sonata
The 85th Anniversary of the Blitz is today. It is much more specific to what happened in Coventry then to generic conflicts like Remembrance Day.
On the 14th of November 1940, German forces launched Operation Moonlight Sonata. It was the biggest attack in history up until that point. Coventry was chosen as their first target because of the manufacturing processes. 25% of all World War II manufacturing came out of Coventry.
Operation Moonlight Sonata sent 535 German bombers in just 11 hours. By the time they had finished, they’d dropped 500 tons of high explosives and 50 air mines. Nothing like it had been seen outside of London.
Coventry Cathedral ruins is just one of the places struck during the Blitz. To commemorate this they host a service in the rebuilt half followed by a vigil in the ruins.
It is important to keep remembering the blitz as it is very important to the Coventry public and to remember those who lost their lives to protect future generations. Coventry is very proud of its city and in turn its history.
