Coventry pub searching for local talent with new monthly open mic night.

The New Spires pub in Coventry is marking the first of their new monthly open mic nights tonight with the hope of finding community talent. With a hopeful range from singers to stand-up, this pub is looking to bring local people together and create a place for talent to be shared. The pilot event will be tonight March 26th at 8pm. It will be open to talent from all variations and skill levels giving it a true community feel.

The event organiser says they’re "all up for local talent” and is hoping that the outreach for the event will grow in the events coming bringing in talent from across Coventry. When asked where they’re hoping the event will go in the future, they hope it becomes a way for “everyone to come together and enjoy good local talent within the community”.

Coventry has a long and established history of local music, dating back to the 2-tone movement in the 1970’s with 2-tone records playing the leading role in racial unity through music. In present-day Coventry, talent from far and wide has gathered with the annual Godiva festival, an affordable festival held in Coventry with both big and local names on the lineup and was the centrepiece in Coventry's live music scene. Last year organisers announced that the annual festival would not be taking place in Coventry in 2026, leaving a large hole in local music opportunities that existed before. This was reflected in the community by Coventry locals taking to social media sites like reddit to express their desire for live music and gigs in the area. Lastly the event organiser is hoping for it “boosting morale in the community with everything that's going on in the current climate”.

These events also create great opportunities for students in a university city like Coventry, giving student bands and solo singers an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. These events also create opportunities for people to meet, expand social circles and promote inclusivity that can become divided when events like these aren't being held. The ability for both established and upcoming artists to express themselves in this way is a great thing for the mood and wellbeing of performers and audience alike. Coming together to create a networking opportunity, uplifting all who step in front of the microphone.

The event will be free to attend emphasising the focus on true community engagement. The organisers are hoping the event will continue to run for many months in the future, expanding the variety and nature of the talent. This will help maintain Coventry as a hub for cultural music and local talent of all varieties.
