“We gave them three goals” - Sky Blues unlucky battle against Charlton
Coventry City U21s produced a spirited second-half response but ultimately fell to a 3–2 defeat against Charlton Athletic U21s at the Coventry Arena.
The match began with a lively atmosphere, boosted by the presence of the younger academy, but both sides made a slow start after kick-off. Coventry initially looked the brighter of the two, pressing aggressively and showing composure in possession. Tristen Batanwi impressed early on, helping to control play and keep the ball moving.
As the first half progressed, Coventry created several opportunities, including a series of corners. George Stepherd came close in the 19th minute after beating his marker to create space, but Charlton’s defence recovered well. Moments later, he tested the goalkeeper again, who made a comfortable save.
Jack James also threatened, producing a strong run and shot in the 27th minute, only to be denied by the Charlton keeper. Despite Coventry’s positive spell, it was the visitors who took the lead on 31 minutes, as Ethan Brown’s work down the right set up Jacob Safa, who finished clinically to make it 1–0.
Coventry were dealt a further blow late in the half. After a brief stoppage due to an injury to Will Russon, Charlton doubled their lead in the 41st minute. Safa delivered a corner which Brown met at the back post to make it 2–0 going into the break.
Charlton extended their advantage early in the second half, with Kaheim Dixon reacting quickest after a save from the Coventry goalkeeper to make it 3–0. However, the Sky Blues responded almost immediately, pulling a goal back just minutes later through Conrad Jacob Ambursley to spark hope of a comeback.
Coventry grew into the game, continuing to push forward and create chances. A late effort from distance went narrowly over, while pressure continued to build in the closing stages. Their persistence paid off in the 88th minute, when trialist A scored from close range following a scramble in the box to reduce the deficit to 3–2.
Despite late pressure and moments of tension, Coventry were unable to find an equaliser, as Charlton held on to secure the victory.
The U21 Sky Blues’ manager Mark Delaney said that they are disappointed by the result. He thought they were a better team on the pitch considering the previous matches:
“The opponents were clinical and took their chances, but we gave them three goals, even if they played well. We scored two goals, but I feel we could have done more. We should have put better perfromance and outcome,” Delaney declared.
At the end, he observed that young players can learn from this experience and they will definetley bring it in their careers:
“For the next match in London, the team needs to be ready to play against a strong team as Watford. Now time to rest, recover and analyse the match to put all the things in the right place.”
